    VB-CUSTOM CO2-POWERED ”RATHUNTER RIFLE”

    (CROSMAN 1077 Repeat AirÒ-based CO2 Pellet Rifle)

    Caliber: 0.177 pellet.

Magazine: rotating cylinder clip 12 shots.

Action mode: semi-automatic action, trigger repeater (as fast as trigger can be pulled).

    Power Plant: 12 g CO2 bulb.

Stock: original with the following modifications: lightly sand-blasted, butt filled with lead pellets in epoxide resin, additional length-adjustable hard rubber buttplate fixed with stainless steel cylinders. Foreend, pistol grip and left butt piece covered with special micro-checkered neoprene rubber.

Further modifications: trigger and magazine-moving parts honed for ultra-smooth action (trigger pull weight approx. 900 g), CO2 tank cover screw modified as stainless steel receiver for MINI MAGLITEÒ AA. (Caution: in Germany: it is prohibited by law to mount any source of target illumination on any gun; violations may be charged with heavy penalty.) For utilization within Germany use recommended PVC/lead dummy with the same weight as the MINI MAGLITEÒ. The rifle may be equipped with an easy-to-install PVC bar at the stock foreend to “guide” a hand-held MINI MAG-LITEÒ. Original iron sights removed. Adjustable stainless steel muzzle weight. Two internal TEFLONÒ “floating” barrel supports for increased barrel stability. The magazine bottom carries a split plastic weight to allow faster magazine exchange or removal.

Muzzle energy: approx. 9 J in the U. S. (in Germany acc to firearms legislation 7.5 J).

    Muzzle velocity: 182 m/sec with 7.5 J version (CROSMAN PREMIERÒ 7,9 grs).

    Sight: 6 x 32 GD6321 MINIÒ pointed crosshair.

Overall length: 105 cm (max buttplate adjust).

    Weight: 3.6 kg.

Accuracy: less than 1 inch diameter for group of 12 shots 20 m distance (fixed rifle, U.S. version).

Description: The VB CUSTOM RATHUNTER CO2 rifle is based on the extremely low-priced (approx. U. S. $ 90.-) CROSMAN 1077 Repeat AirÒ CO2-powered rifle. It is especially designed for pest control under difficult light conditions or in darkness. The original plastic stock backpiece is filled with (used) lead pellets embedded in epoxide resin. The original buttplate is fitted with 2 tubular stainless steel receivers in which the stainless steel carriers of the 28 mm hard rubber buttplate are inserted. The latter may be adjusted continuously to distances from 0 to 5 cm. The whole stock is lightly sandblasted and the forepiece, the pistol grip and a part of the left side (for right-handed shooters) of the butt are covered with physiological inert neoprene rubber sheets with micro-checkered surface to allow a sure grip. The cap screw of the CO2 tank is modified as a receiver for an AA MINI MAGLITEÒ which provides a good target illumination on distances up to 10 to 12 m which is the maximum to be used in pest control with low-powered air- or CO2-rifles. The latest development is designed to carry a SURE FIREÒ Combat flashlight. (ATTENTION: it must be pointed out clearly that German firearm legislation strictly prohibits the mechanical combination of any target-illumination light source with any type of gun.) So, for utilization within Germany a weight-identical MINI-MAGLITEÒ dummy (plastic with lead core) may be inserted. The lamp then can be used by pressing it to the rubber -covered left stock foreend side with the thumb of the left hand of a right-handed shooter. In this case it is recommended to fix a PVC adjustment bar with the short black screws into pre-drilled holes near the barrel. This is a legal procedure for pest control and the lamp direction is guided to the target without a mechanical coupling of gun and light source.) The original barrel housed in a relatively thin-walled steel tube was supported at the muzzle by a plastic cylinder carrying the front sight. This was removed and the inner barrel now is supported by 2 ”floating” TEFLONÒ cylinders, i. e. these do not fit exactly into the diameter of the barrel housing. One of those reaches under the barrel band and the other is under the muzzle weight. Both are about 0.5 hundreds of an inch smaller than the barrel housing diameter and they are fixed each with an about 0.01 inch tolerance by 2 removable steel pins inserted into the barrel housing and which are held in place by a PVC support block inserted into the stock foreend and the muzzle weight, resp.. The latter is made of stainless steel and adjusted in a way to keep the rifle in a perfect balance when held at the trigger guard. It may be modified to fit individual demands of the shooter (some like a heavier muzzle end). The rifle was tested fixed in a “shooting machine” and gave excellent 12 shot-groupings of less than 2,5 cm (1 inch) at a distance of 20 m at an ambient temperature of 20°C with the U.S. version. Lower temperatures result in a altered vertical trajectory shooting about a little bit more than 1 inch (about 3 cm) lower at 12°C. Ultra-rapid fire of a whole magazine will also result in a drastically altered bullet trajectory. Finally, the mounted 6x32 GD6321 MINIÒ pointed crosshair scope was adjusted to 12 m which corresponds to the adequate hunting distance for, e. g., rats. The 6-fold magnification of the scope is the highest which can be recommended and should be used only by experienced shooters. Beginners should start with a 3-fold magnification. In case of using no light source a larger scope diameter (40 - 50 mm) should be chosen for pest control under weak light conditions. Variable scopes are not recommended for the close distances because they may create difficulties with parallax compensation. One CO2 bulb is good for approx. 3 magazines (36 shots). Larger CO2 and compressed air containers replacing the lamp adapter are commercially available (German and British providers; must be imported to the U.S.) but do not pay off in my experience. The customized VB RATHUNTER RIFLE is not commercially available but advice can be provided how to make or where to obtain muzzle weight and lamp receiver and how to construct the adjustable butt plate.. Tuning of the trigger mechanism should only be done by an experienced gunsmith (addresses available in the U.S. and Germany). Even when done totally by oneself the VB-RATHUNTER modifications are not cheap (approx. U.S. 200.- for the MAGLITEÒ version, the SURE-FIRE flashlight including mount demands additionally U.S.$ 110.-) but result in a totally novel and exciting rifle with an excellent performance for the designated purpose. It is also great for 5 shot-rapid fire silhouette shooting on 15 or 20 m distance (allow 30 seconds for a 5 target series or take 15 seconds for ram, 20 seconds for pig, 25 for turkey and 30 seconds for chicken). This procedure is especially great for Field Target Club competitions to increase the challenge and fun!

Special remarks for pest control: The ”Rathunter Rifle” was developed especially by reasons of an intolerable high and aggressive rat population in my home area in Florida. Some pests, especially rats, are more intelligent than the controller might believe. They recognize rapidly the connection between the death of a species companion and a human being carrying a rifle and will not longer accept baits if they recognize the latter. The only way for successful hunting is therefore to offer baits at a suitable place short before dawn and to hide and to wait with the aimed rifle with patience until they appear to take them. Then, switch on the flashlight and the animals mostly ”freeze” in the light beam. The SURE FIREÒ is the optimal solution for this procedure. Then immediately start rapid fire.

    VB’s permanent advice:

EVER FOLLOW STRICTLY THE SAFETY RULES WHEN TOUCHING AND USING A GUN!! NOBODY IS ABLE TO BRING A BULLET BACK WHEN ONCE FIRED! EVEN A LOW-POWERED AIRGUN IS NO TOY AND MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY!
